Balkh University (BU) is a public university in Mazar-i-Sharif, the capital of Balkh Province in northern Afghanistan. Established in 1986, the university has about 18,000 students and is the third-largest in Afghanistan after Kabul University and Nangarhar University. Faculties include medicine, engineering, economics, journalism, literature, law and science. The university has a long and distinguished history, dating back to the 12th century. It has been home to some of the most influential scholars and thinkers in the Islamic world, and it continues to play a vital role in Afghan society today.
